In Italy and other European countries drinking wine with a meal – lunch and dinner – on a daily basis is seen as part of tradition, culture and cuisine. Wine production in Italy is mainly in the hands of farming co-operatives. While Italy is the oldest wine-producing region in the world and the largest producer by volume the country ranks only fifth in the world for wine consumption.
